Google Gemini Introduces Chat and Memory Import Features
Google is rolling out significant new capabilities for its Gemini AI platform, allowing users to import their chat histories and memory from other AI applications. These updates are launching alongside the Gemini 3.1 Flash Live update, aiming to provide a more integrated user experience.
The new features empower Gemini users to seamlessly transfer their AI conversations and contextual information, starting with support for ChatGPT and Claude.
To access these new import functionalities, users have two primary methods: they can select the "Settings & help" gear icon to find an "Import memory to Gemini" option, or directly visit gemini.google.com/import.
Chat Import Feature
The "Import chats" option allows users to bring their past conversations into Gemini. This feature is designed to make the transition between AI platforms smoother for users.
Users can upload
.zipfiles, with a maximum size of 5 GB per file, containing exported data from other AI applications. Google specifically supports imports from ChatGPT and Claude, with a limit of up to five.zipfiles per day.
Exporting Data from Other AI Platforms
To utilize the chat import feature, users must first export their data from the source AI application:
-
For ChatGPT:
- Click your username in the bottom left.
- Navigate to Settings, then Data controls.
- Select Export data and confirm the export.
-
For Claude:
- Click your username, then Settings, and Privacy.
- Select Export data and choose the desired data range.
- Click Export. A download link for the data will be sent to the email associated with your account on the other AI platform.
Managing Imported Chats in Gemini
Once imported, conversations are clearly visible in the standard Gemini side panel, marked with a distinctive import chat icon. Users are able to search for and delete specific conversations as needed. To remove all conversations from a particular import, users can find the import entry and select the delete option next to it. Re-uploading a .zip file containing exported chats will integrate any new conversations and overwrite previously imported ones from that specific file.
Memory Import Feature
Beyond chat histories, Gemini also introduces a "Memory Import" feature for transferring contextual information. This allows users to bring over specific details about themselves or their preferences.
This process involves inputting a specific prompt into another chat application to summarize known details about the user. The generated summary is then simply pasted into Gemini to transfer that memory.
Regional Availability
It is important to note that this new import functionality is currently unavailable to users in the European Economic Area (EEA), Switzerland, or the United Kingdom.
