Willie Peters Poised to Lead PNG Chiefs as Inaugural NRL Coach
Willie Peters is anticipated to be named the inaugural head coach of the PNG Chiefs, the 19th team slated to join the National Rugby League (NRL) in 2028. While a contract is reportedly pending finalization, Peters has communicated his intention to his current club, Hull KR, regarding this prospective transition.
Peters has reportedly informed Hull KR players and staff of his upcoming move. This appointment would mark his first head coaching role in the NRL.
Appointment Details
Peters, 47, has been identified as the preferred candidate for the coaching position. The Australian Rugby League Commission has reportedly selected him following a selection process that included other candidates such as Brad Arthur, Jason Demetriou, and Adrian Lam.
The PNG Chiefs are scheduled to debut in the NRL in 2028. Reports regarding Peters' anticipated announcement emerged on Friday morning AEDT, with the finalization of paperwork still pending. He is expected to commence his duties with the PNG Chiefs after fulfilling his current commitments with Hull KR at the conclusion of the season.
Coaching Background
Currently serving as the head coach for Hull KR in the Super League, Peters has held this position for four seasons. During his tenure, he has guided the club to the last two Super League Grand Finals and secured a World Club Challenge victory against the Brisbane Broncos in February. Peters has also served as an assistant coach for the Australian national side, known as the Kangaroos, including during last year's Ashes series.
Peters' Stated Interests
Peters has previously expressed his readiness for an NRL coaching role, stating, "The only way you can show that is by getting an opportunity in the NRL and proving yourself." He has also indicated an interest in the opportunity to establish the culture and "DNA" of a new club, emphasizing "connection and care" as core values he would prioritize.
