Iowa-Illinois Basketball Rivalry Intensifies Ahead of Elite Eight Matchup

The college basketball rivalry between the University of Iowa and the University of Illinois features a history of intense competition and contentious incidents. This rivalry is set to be renewed on Saturday as the No. 9 seed Iowa Hawkeyes are scheduled to compete against the No. 3 seed Illinois Fighting Illini in the Elite Eight.

Illinois, a team that maintained a top-10 ranking for much of the season, entered with championship expectations. Iowa, with a first-year coach, Ben McCollum, and a newly assembled roster, has focused on present performance.

Historical Context

Illinois leads the overall series 95-77 and has secured victories in nine of the last ten matchups. In games where both teams were ranked, the Hawkeyes hold a slight advantage with an 11-10 record over 21 contests. The rivalry spans 12 decades, with its most significant escalation tied to a recruiting scandal that occurred nearly 40 years ago.

The Bruce Pearl Recruiting Scandal

Between 1987 and 1989, the rivalry frequently featured top-20 teams, with both programs achieving success in the NCAA Tournament. A central point of contention was the fierce recruiting competition for Chicago Simeon forward Deon Thomas. Thomas initially committed to Iowa but subsequently changed his commitment to Illinois.

In April 1989, Bruce Pearl, then an assistant coach for Iowa, recorded a conversation with Thomas without Thomas's permission. In this conversation, Thomas reportedly made ambiguous statements suggesting that Illinois staff members had offered him cash, a vehicle, and other benefits.

Pearl submitted this recording to the NCAA, accompanied by an 11-page internal memo titled “Confidential.” This memo detailed various allegations involving Illinois and Thomas over a five-month period.

Pearl's documentation included a claim from December 8, 1988, where Thomas allegedly stated Illinois would assist him and his grandmother with housing and compared potential benefits to those received by another Illinois player, Marcus Liberty, reportedly totaling “$75,000 and a car.”

On February 1, 1989, Pearl wrote that Thomas informed him of an offer for “$80,000 and a brand new Blazer” from an Illinois coach during a visit. The memo's final pages outlined a "Strategy" for notifying the NCAA upon Thomas's enrollment at Illinois, while aiming to keep Iowa's involvement anonymous. University of Iowa officials reviewed the memo but did not take further action.

Despite Pearl's intention for anonymity, the memo became public, leading to him being widely regarded negatively in Champaign. When the teams played in Champaign on March 4, 1990, Iowa's team stayed approximately 90 miles away in Peoria, Illinois, and Pearl did not attend the game. Police officers provided escort for the visiting team throughout the trip.

NCAA Investigation and Outcomes

The NCAA conducted a thorough investigation into Illinois’ recruitment of Deon Thomas and LaPhonso Ellis (who ultimately attended Notre Dame). The evidence regarding the primary allegations was deemed inconclusive.

However, Illinois was found responsible for other minor violations, including providing complimentary tickets to former players and high school coaches, and improper recruiting tactics attributed to assistant coach Jimmy Collins. As a consequence, the NCAA imposed a one-year tournament ban on Illinois for the 1990-91 season.

Andy Kaufmann, who played for Illinois from 1988 to 1993, noted that the situation resulted in him missing the NCAA Tournament during his junior year.

Jess Settles, an Iowa player from 1993 to 1999, highlighted the intense nature of the events. Deon Thomas went on to become Illinois’ all-time leading scorer and now works as a color analyst for the team’s radio broadcasts. During his playing career, he was frequently taunted by Iowa students regarding the alleged car offer.

Additional Rivalry Incidents

Beyond the Pearl-Thomas incident, the rivalry has experienced several other notable flashpoints:

  • 1930: The Big Ten Conference briefly suspended Iowa due to the provision of stipends to athletes, with Illinois and Minnesota participating in the judgment against Iowa’s athletics department.
  • 1952 Football Game: Following several calls against the Hawkeyes, fans at a football game in Iowa City threw apples at officials and Illinois players. This led to a temporary suspension of the football series until 1967 due to the heightened tension.
  • 1987 Maui Invitational: Reports indicate a physical altercation between players from both teams occurred in a hotel room.
  • 2010 Orange Krush Incident: The Illinois student section, the Orange Krush, acquired tickets for a game in Iowa City via an Iowa booster. Over 300 visiting fans displayed their team shirts behind an Iowa basket, which reportedly influenced the dismissal of then-Iowa coach Todd Lickliter.
  • 2023 Orange Krush Incident: The Orange Krush attempted to obtain reduced-price tickets for a game at Carver-Hawkeye Arena by falsely claiming affiliation with a Boys and Girls Club. Iowa athletics intercepted this attempt, rescinded the tickets, and the group issued an apology.
  • 2019 Handshake Line: Following an Iowa victory, an exchange of words occurred between then-Illinois assistant coach Chin Coleman and then-Iowa head coach Fran McCaffery regarding a late basket, requiring separation of the teams.

On-Court Highlights

The series has also featured significant on-court drama:

  • 1987: No. 2 Iowa overcame a 20-point deficit against No. 9 Illinois at Assembly Hall to secure a 91-88 overtime victory, subsequently rising to the No. 1 ranking.
  • 1993: On February 4, at Assembly Hall, Illinois guard T.J. Wheeler passed to Andy Kaufmann, who, with 1.5 seconds remaining, successfully shot a game-winning 3-pointer from the right sideline, leading to a celebration by Illinois players.

Illinois coach Brad Underwood emphasized the importance of historical rivalries to college basketball, noting that the upcoming Elite Eight game presents an opportunity for a significant moment in the series.
