Jair Bolsonaro Undergoes Successful Surgery, Endorses Son for 2026 Presidency
Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has undergone successful surgery for a double hernia. The procedure took place at a hospital in BrasĂlia, following a transfer approved by Brazil's Supreme Court.
Bolsonaro is currently serving a 27-year sentence at federal police headquarters for his role in plotting a coup after the 2022 presidential election, which he lost to Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
Presidential Endorsement
Ahead of his surgery, Jair Bolsonaro formally endorsed the candidacy of his eldest son, Flávio Bolsonaro, for the 2026 presidential race. This endorsement was conveyed in a handwritten letter, read publicly by Flávio Bolsonaro outside the hospital.
In the letter, Jair Bolsonaro stated, "I hand over what is most important in the life of a father - my own son for the mission of rescuing our country, Brazil."
Flávio Bolsonaro, a 44-year-old senator, had previously announced his intention to run for president under his father's Liberal Party, stating earlier this month that his father had entrusted him with "the mission of continuing our national project." The letter confirms Senator Bolsonaro has his father's backing.
Political Landscape
Incumbent President Lula has confirmed his intention to seek re-election in October 2026.
Jair Bolsonaro's conviction in September this year stemmed from events following the 2022 election, where he refused to accept the result. This led to a plot with military leaders, which ultimately failed to gain sufficient support but culminated in the storming of government buildings by Bolsonaro's supporters on January 8, 2023.
Despite his conviction, Jair Bolsonaro maintains significant political influence. Brazil's Congress recently passed a bill that would have reduced his sentence; however, President Lula announced his intention to veto the legislation.
Bolsonaro is expected to return to federal police headquarters upon medical clearance.
