YouTube for Android Auto: Limited Audio Controls Roll Out
YouTube for Android has introduced limited support for Android Auto, enabling users to control audio playback directly from the vehicle's dashboard media widget. This functionality is becoming widely available across various devices and app versions, as reported by users.
The new integration allows for basic audio controls such as play/pause and skipping to the next video in a playlist. These actions are also compatible with steering wheel controls, offering added convenience.
It is important to note that this is not a full YouTube application for Android Auto. Video playback is not supported, and a comprehensive media control interface is not available at this time.
To utilize background audio playback through Android Auto, a YouTube Premium subscription is required. As of February 2026, the Premium Lite plan, priced at $7.99 per month, includes background play functionality.
Google has indicated that a more comprehensive YouTube for Android Auto release is still under consideration for future development.
