Apple Maps to Introduce Ads in Summer 2025

Apple has announced plans to introduce advertisements into its Maps application for users in the United States and Canada, with a launch window set for summer 2025. Preparations for this rollout have been observed in the iOS 26.5 beta software, which also includes a new "Suggested Places" feature.

Ad Placement and Timing

When the ad system launches, advertisements are planned to appear in two locations within Apple Maps:

  • Top of search results: One ad will be displayed at the top of the results list when a user performs a search.
  • 'Suggested Places' section: One ad will appear within the search panel's 'Suggested Places' area.

Both ad placements are indicated by a blue background and the word "Ad."

The backend compatibility for this feature was introduced in iOS 26.5. A pop-up notification appeared in the Apple Maps app included with iOS 26.5 beta 2. This pop-up informs users that "Maps may show local ads based on your approximate location, current search terms, or view of the map while you search."

The notification also states that there is no option to opt out of receiving ads within the Maps application.

The pop-up is part of the groundwork for the ad rollout. While it does not confirm that ads will launch specifically with the final release of iOS 26.5, it indicates that a launch with that update is likely.

Privacy Policy

Apple has stated that user privacy protections remain unchanged with the introduction of ads. According to the company:

  • A user's location and interactions with ads are not linked to their Apple Account.
  • Personal data stays on the user's device, is not collected by Apple, and is not shared with third parties.

The pop-up notification in the beta software contains a similar statement: "For your privacy, advertising information is not linked to your Apple Account."

'Suggested Places' Feature

Coinciding with the ad rollout, iOS 26.5 beta 1 introduced a new feature called "Suggested Places." This feature appears when a user taps the search bar in Apple Maps. It displays two recommended places based on trending nearby locations and the user's recent search history.

The recommendations refresh frequently and adjust based on the user's current location or recent searches. While the feature will eventually include sponsored suggestions, it initially offers organic (unpaid) recommendations.

Business Integration

Businesses can manage their promotions through the Apple Business platform, allowing them to participate in the advertising program.
