"It's been such an honor to be part of 'Moulin Rouge!'"
Megan Thee Stallion will end her starring role in Broadway's Moulin Rouge! The Musical on May 1, 2025, two weeks earlier than the originally scheduled final performance of May 17. The early departure follows a medical incident in which she was hospitalized on March 31 after falling ill during a performance.
Role and Run Details
Megan Thee Stallion began an eight-week engagement as Zidler (previously Harold Zidler) in Moulin Rouge! The Musical on March 24, 2025. She is the first female performer to portray this role in any production of the musical. Her final performance is scheduled for May 1 at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre.
A replacement performer for the role from May 2-17 has not been announced. The production's run has been extended by five weeks and is now scheduled to close on August 30, 2025.
Since her debut, the show's weekly grosses increased from approximately $872,702 for the week ending March 1 to over $1 million per week, reaching $1,663,269 for the week ending April 19.
Medical Incident
On March 31, Megan Thee Stallion exited a performance mid-show after experiencing concerning symptoms. The FDNY responded to the theater for a person reported to be experiencing breathing difficulties.
Her representative confirmed she was transported to a local hospital for medical evaluation. Doctors identified extreme exhaustion, dehydration, vasoconstriction, and low metabolic levels as the causes of her symptoms. She received treatment, was discharged, and was resting.
An attendee reported that another actor replaced her for the remainder of the March 31 performance. She did not perform in the April 1 show.
Return to Performance
On April 1, Megan Thee Stallion addressed the incident via Instagram, describing it as a "wake-up call." She stated she had been pushing herself past her limits and that her body "finally said enough." She indicated she would take one day to rest and recover.
She returned to the stage for the April 2 performance and continued in the role until May 1.
Personal Statement
In a statement regarding her early departure, Megan Thee Stallion expressed gratitude to the cast and crew:
"It's been such an honor to be part of 'Moulin Rouge!' and I've met so many amazing people in this theater. Y'all work so hard and I have so much respect for the dedication, the stamina, the work ethic, the time and the effort y'all put into the work."
She noted the experience inspired her as an entertainer.
