Rodrigo announced the album on Instagram, following a prior wipe of her social media posts. The album cover depicts Rodrigo upside-down on a swing. The album follows her previous releases, Sour (2021) and Guts (2023).

The album was recorded with producer Dan Nigro, who also worked on Rodrigo's previous albums. Additional production credits include Jim-E Stack and Mike Wise. Songwriters on the album include Amy Allen. Conan Gray provides background vocals on a track titled "Honeybee."
Creative Process
In a prior interview with British Vogue, Rodrigo stated that writing from a joyful perspective was a creative challenge. She described the new tracks as "sad love songs," noting that her favorite romantic songs often include elements of "fear or yearning."
