The Devil Wears Prada 2: Streep and Wintour Grace Vogue Cover Ahead of May Release

Actress Meryl Streep and Anna Wintour, global editorial director of Vogue, appear on the cover of the magazine in advance of the upcoming film The Devil Wears Prada 2. The photoshoot was conducted by Annie Leibovitz.

The film, set for release on May 1, is a sequel to the 2006 movie based on a novel by Lauren Weisberger.

Film Synopsis and Cast

Streep reprises her role as Miranda Priestly, the fictional editor of a high-fashion magazine. The sequel depicts Priestly navigating the modern news media landscape as her print publication adapts to contemporary trends. The plot introduces a new features editor, Andy Sachs (played by Anne Hathaway), a former assistant to Priestly.

Actor Justin Theroux plays a character described as a billionaire tech mogul, depicted as a composite of Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk. Emily Blunt’s character, Emily, is portrayed as the mogul's partner. Lucy Liu plays the mogul's first wife, based on MacKenzie Scott. A subplot involves Blunt’s character attempting to persuade her partner to purchase the fictional magazine Runway.

A spokesperson for Blunt denied that her character is based on Lauren Sánchez Bezos. Representatives for Sánchez Bezos did not respond to requests for comment. Disney declined to comment on the film's content.

Interviews and Comments

During an interview for Vogue moderated by Greta Gerwig, Wintour stated it was an honor to be played by Streep in the original film but described the character of Priestly as "distant" from her reality, calling the role an "extraordinary gift." Wintour said she finds the film "highly enjoyable" and "very funny," and previously described the character portrayal as a "cartoonish" caricature.

"All dress is about expressing yourself, but we're also subject to larger historical and political sweeps of expectation."
— Meryl Streep

Wintour raised the topic of Melania Trump during the interview. Streep commented on the former First Lady's jacket, worn in June 2018 during a visit to migrant children, which read "I Really Don't Care, Do U?" Streep stated that "all dress is about expressing yourself, but we're also subject to larger historical and political sweeps of expectation." Trump had previously told ABC News that the jacket was a message "for the people and for the left-wing media who are criticizing me," and that it signified a lack of concern for that criticism.

Streep also discussed female fashion in politics, stating that women in power often appear with bare arms on television while men wear shirts and ties. She suggested this reflects an expectation for women to show "smallness" or apology.

Regarding the film's portrayal of the publishing industry, Streep expressed interest in the business aspects of the role, stating she believes the film "located something true about the business now."

Related Events

The film’s release coincides with the upcoming Met Gala, where Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez Bezos are scheduled to serve as co-chairs alongside Anna Wintour, Beyoncé, and Nicole Kidman. A poster campaign protesting the Bezoses' involvement with the Met Gala has appeared in New York City, citing worker exploitation at Amazon and reported support for deportations. The Bezoses' wedding in Venice in June 2025 also faced protests over its reported cost and environmental impact.

The premiere of The Devil Wears Prada 2 was attended by Condé Nast CEO Roger Lynch and Vogue's Chloe Malle.
