An incident in India's Hojai district, Assam state, resulted in the death of seven wild Asian elephants, including calves, following a collision with a high-speed train.
Another calf sustained injuries in the event, which occurred early Saturday.
The Northeast Frontier Railway reported that the train operator identified a herd of elephants and initiated emergency braking procedures. Despite these actions, some animals were struck.
The collision led to the derailment of five carriages from the Delhi-bound express train. No injuries were reported among the passengers or railway personnel.
Train services in the area experienced cancellations and diversions for the remainder of the day.
