Warner Bros. Confirms Ocean's Eleven Prequel Set in 1962 Monaco

The untitled prequel will focus on Danny Ocean's parents, described as "two masterminds" who taught him "everything he knows."

Warner Bros. has officially confirmed production of an untitled prequel to the Ocean's Eleven film franchise. The project, set during the 1962 Monaco Grand Prix, will focus on the parents of the character Danny Ocean and is scheduled for theatrical release on June 25, 2027.

Cast & Crew

Margot Robbie and Bradley Cooper are attached to star in the film. Cooper is also set to direct.

The screenplay is written by Carrie Solomon. Robbie is producing through her company, LuckyChap, with Cooper also attached as a producer.

Plot Details

According to statements made by Margot Robbie during Warner Bros.' CinemaCon presentation, the narrative will center on Danny Ocean's parents in their prime. Robbie described the characters as "two masterminds" who taught Danny Ocean "everything he knows." The plot will depict them executing a heist at the 1962 Monaco Grand Prix.

Development History

Directorial Shifts: Two previous filmmakers, Lee Isaac Chung and Jay Roach, were previously attached to direct the prequel but have since departed. A joint statement from Warner Bros. and LuckyChap cited "creative differences" regarding Chung's departure.

Franchise Context: This prequel is separate from another announced sequel to the original Ocean's trilogy, which is reported to feature returning cast members including George Clooney, Julia Roberts, Matt Damon, Brad Pitt, and Don Cheadle.

The modern Ocean's franchise began with Steven Soderbergh's 2001 film Ocean's Eleven, a remake of the 1960 film Ocean's 11. The series continued with Ocean's Twelve (2004) and Ocean's Thirteen (2007). A spinoff, Ocean's Eight, was released in 2018.

Production Schedule

Filming is expected to begin in 2024, with reports suggesting production will start in late July in Paris before moving to the south of France.

Additional Casting

Actor Wagner Moura is reported to be in negotiations to join the cast as the film's villain. Moura is known for his roles in Elite Squad, Narcos, and The Secret Agent, for which he received an Academy Award nomination and won Best Actor at Cannes and a Golden Globe.

Warner Bros. 2027 Slate & Studio Performance

The Ocean's prequel was announced as part of Warner Bros.' 2027 film slate during its CinemaCon presentation. Other films previewed for that year include:

  • A Minecraft Movie 2
  • Margie Claus, a Christmas comedy starring Melissa McCarthy

  • The Revenge of La Llorona (April 9, 2027)
  • Digger, starring Tom Cruise

Studio Performance: Warner Bros. reported that in 2025, it had seven consecutive film releases that each opened with over $40 million in box office revenue. These films—including Sinners, Weapons, and A Minecraft Movie—generated a combined $4.4 billion in global box office revenue. Studio co-chair Mike De Luca stated this was the first time the studio had reached that benchmark since 2019.
