Google Rolls Out Android Canary Build 2604 with UI Tweaks for Pixel 8 Series

Google has released Android Canary build 2604 (ZP11.260320.007) for the Pixel 8 series and newer devices. This experimental build introduces several user interface modifications and is available for download now, with images for older Pixel models expected later.

This is an experimental build. Google advises against installing it on your primary device.

Build Availability

The current build is available for the Pixel 8 series and newer Pixel devices. Factory images for the following devices are scheduled for a later release:

  • Pixel 7a, Pixel 7 Pro, Pixel 7
  • Pixel 6a, Pixel 6 Pro, Pixel 6
  • Pixel Fold, Pixel Tablet

Canary Channel Information

The Canary channel is Google's experimental development track where features are actively being tested. Key characteristics include:

  • Stability: Google advises against installing these builds on primary devices due to potential instability and unexpected issues.
  • Rollback: Once a Canary build is installed, rolling back to a stable version is not straightforward. Users must flash a non-Canary build, which requires a full data wipe.
  • Updates: To stop receiving Canary over-the-air (OTA) updates, users must flash a non-Canary build, also necessitating a full data wipe.

User Interface Changes

According to Google's Mishaal Rahman, the new build includes several user-facing modifications. Some of these changes were also present in build 2603.

Notification Panel

  • A new "You're all caught up" message now appears when clearing all notifications, replacing the previous "No notifications" text.

App Icon Long-Press Menus

  • App icon long-press menus have been redesigned to be more compact.
  • Shortcuts are initially collapsed behind a new "Shortcuts" toggle.
  • After expanding shortcuts, the actions menu is collapsed by default and can be revealed via an "Actions" toggle.
