Crocodile Attack in Western Australia's Kimberley Region
A man in his 20s was attacked by a large crocodile at a camping spot near Hidden Creek, approximately 50 kilometers north of Broome. The incident occurred on Saturday, and the man was subsequently admitted to Broome Hospital in stable condition.
The man was later transferred to Perth via the Royal Flying Doctor Service for further medical care.
Location of the Attack
The attack occurred on a beach past the Coulomb Point Nature Reserve, adjacent to Hidden Creek. The remote area is accessed by the unsealed Manari Road on the Dampier Peninsula.
Official Response and Investigation
The WA Country Health Service reported the man's admission and transfer. A spokesperson for the Royal Flying Doctor Service confirmed the medical evacuation.
The Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions (DBCA) stated it was notified of the incident on Monday and has spoken with a relative of the victim. The DBCA said it will undertake a site visit as part of its investigation into the attack.
Context: Recent Crocodile Activity
This is the second reported crocodile attack in the region in less than five months.
- In January, a man received lacerations from a 3-meter saltwater crocodile near the La Djardarr Bay Community on the Dampier Peninsula.
- Earlier in 2024, another man was attacked by a 3-meter saltwater crocodile while spearfishing near islands off the coast of One Arm Point.
Local rangers have reported an increase in crocodile activity in the area. Authorities continue to warn residents and visitors about the significant dangers posed by saltwater crocodiles.
