Anzac Day Recognition

Tomorrow marks Anzac Day a day to recognize the service of men and women in Australia's armed forces. The AMA president, as the wife of a serving member, extended gratitude to members who serve or have served, their families, and AMA members who treat veterans.

"We honor those who have served and those who continue to support them."

Vaccination Campaign Launch

Yesterday, the AMA launched the "Have the Jab Chat" campaign. Australia's vaccination rates have fallen since the COVID-19 pandemic, with childhood vaccine coverage below 95%, the level needed for community protection. The campaign emphasizes the role of general practitioners as expert advisers on vaccinations.

Childhood vaccine coverage is below the 95% threshold required for community protection.

Concerns About Online Health Misinformation

The AMA president noted the spread of health misinformation and anti-science sentiment online, including deepfakes. The campaign encourages Australians to consult doctors for vaccination advice.

Peptides Warning

The AMA president warned against unapproved peptides peddled by influencers for muscle building, weight loss, tanning, and anti-ageing. These products are not approved for human use and lack quality or safety oversight.

Practice Nurse Funding Reform

The AMA released a position statement calling for funding reforms to improve access to nurses in general practice. Inadequate Workforce Incentive Program payments and outdated Medicare rules hinder employment and retention of practice nurses.

Outdated Medicare rules and insufficient payments are blocking access to practice nurses.

Aged Care and NDIS Announcements

Minister Mark Butler made announcements regarding aged care and the NDIS. The AMA expressed concern that funding may come at the expense of supports enabling older Australians to hold private health insurance. The AMA called for comprehensive reforms to ensure private insurance delivers value for money.
