Gemini Digital Assistant Experiences Glitches While Rolling Out to Vehicles

View source

A bug in Alphabet Inc.'s Gemini digital assistant is preventing some users from making voice-activated calls on Android Auto and Android devices. Simultaneously, the company is expanding the availability of Gemini to vehicles running Android Automotive, starting with Volvo models.

Widespread Calling Bug

Multiple Android Auto users have reported a recurring error on Reddit and other forums. When attempting to place a call using Gemini, either on Android Auto or directly on an Android phone, the system displays the error message: "Something went wrong. Please try again." The root cause has not been officially identified but may be related to an update to the Gemini application or the Google app.

A temporary workaround reported by users is to switch back to Google Assistant for voice calls. Separately, some users have reported a visual bug in Android Auto where the Assistant icon intermittently appears instead of Gemini, though Gemini continues to respond to commands. No official statement or permanent fix has been provided by Google.

Android Auto Version 16.7 Bug

Further reports on Google's official community forum indicate that updating to Android Auto version 16.7 triggers a bug for users enrolled in the Gemini for Android Auto beta. Affected users report that the digital assistant reverts from Gemini to Google Assistant. A reported workaround involves manually switching the digital assistant to Google Assistant in settings and then re-enabling Gemini. Google support has not announced a timeline for a fix.

Expansion to Android Automotive Vehicles

Following a preview at Google I/O 2025, Gemini has begun rolling out to existing vehicles equipped with Android Automotive ("Google Built-in"), starting with Volvo models such as the EX30. Eligible vehicles will display a pop-up prompt to "Start using Gemini," which is described as "your AI assistant for the car." Users may dismiss the prompt and continue using Google Assistant.

Features and Report on Performance

In vehicles, Gemini appears as a pill-shaped interface with a dedicated "Live" button for real-time conversation. The assistant offers voice control for vehicle-specific functions—such as adjusting air conditioning, activating heated seats, and controlling windshield wipers—with the level of integration dependent on manufacturer support.

Early user reports indicate Gemini handles ambiguous requests more effectively than Google Assistant. For example, a command to set the air conditioning to "100% power" was interpreted and executed appropriately, whereas Assistant previously required explicit level specifications.

Additional vehicles from various manufacturers are expected to receive the update in the coming weeks, according to each carmaker's schedule.
