EU Leaders Move to Strengthen Mutual Defense Clause Amid NATO Uncertainty

Key Development: EU leaders have agreed that the European Commission will prepare a blueprint on how the bloc would respond if the mutual assistance clause (Article 42.7 of the EU treaty) is triggered, according to Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides, who is hosting the talks.

The Context

The mutual defense clause was discussed on Thursday night, following reports that the US was exploring how to suspend Spain from NATO. This occurs amid growing concerns about the US response to a foreign attack against allied nations, given US criticism of allies for not participating in the US-Israel conflict with Iran.

This month, former President Trump stated he was "absolutely without question" considering withdrawing the US from NATO. Meanwhile, Spain's Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez affirmed Spain's loyalty to NATO while renewing criticism of "the failure of brute force in the Middle East."
