Mental Health Commission Partners with Monash University for Major Economic Evaluation
The National Mental Health Commission has engaged Monash University to deliver an economic modeling and evaluation of mental health interventions. The project will take place over 18 months and aims to provide evidence to guide future investment and reform.
Two-Phase Project Structure
Phase 1: Evidence Mapping and Planning
Map existing evidence, identify gaps, and develop a modeling plan for priority interventions lacking strong economic evaluation.
Phase 2: Detailed Economic Modeling
Conduct detailed economic modeling of selected interventions, assessing cost-effectiveness and long-term social and economic impact.
Initial findings are expected later in 2025, with a final report due in 2027.
Key Voices
David McGrath, CEO of the National Mental Health Commission, stated that the project aims to show which mental health services deliver the biggest benefits and where government investment should be directed.
Professor Cathy Mihalopoulos, project lead from Monash University, stated that the project will identify cost-effective opportunities to improve mental health and strengthen reporting, monitoring, and accountability.
Alignment with National Priorities
The approach aligns with recommendations from the Productivity Commission regarding effectiveness and accountability in mental health spending.
