A childcare worker has been charged with common assault following an incident at a centre in Panania, Sydney, involving two boys, aged three and four.
Incident Details
According to police reports, the alleged assault occurred at approximately 1pm on Thursday at a childcare centre in Panania. The man is accused of slapping both boys in the face with an open hand. Source reports state that the children were sleeping at the time of the incident.
The incident was captured on CCTV, according to a statement made in court.
Arrest and Charges
The man was arrested on Saturday morning at an address in Belmore and taken to Bankstown Police Station. He has been charged with two counts of common assault.
The individual has been identified as Jayendra Jung Shahi, a 24-year-old Nepalese national. One source had previously reported the suspect's age as 25.
Court Proceedings
Shahi appeared in court on Sunday. Acting Judge Amanda Coultas-Roberts noted that the alleged assaults were serious in nature due to occurring in a childcare setting while the children were sleeping.
The man was refused bail and is scheduled to appear in court again at a later date.
