Ross River Virus Detected in Mosquitoes at Narrabeen Lagoon

View source

Ross River virus has been detected in a sample of mosquitoes trapped at Narrabeen Lagoon as part of the NSW Arbovirus Surveillance and Mosquito Monitoring Program (ASMMP). The detection follows the finding of Stratford virus in mosquitoes trapped in March and April 2026.

Transmission

Both Ross River virus and Stratford virus are spread through the bite of infected mosquitoes, not person-to-person contact. Wallabies in the surrounding bushland are considered a likely reservoir for the viruses.

Symptoms

Stratford virus is sometimes referred to as a 'cousin' of Ross River virus because their symptoms are nearly identical.

Response

Northern Beaches Council has advised residents to take extra precautions against mosquitoes.
