Mass Wedding Brings 'Hope for Change' to Displaced Gazans
Deir al-Balah, Gaza — A mass wedding for 300 couples was held in Deir al-Balah, Gaza, bringing a rare moment of celebration to a region devastated by war.
The event was funded by the Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan Foundation as part of the United Arab Emirates' humanitarian initiative Operation Gallant Knight 3, which aims to provide support to Palestinians in Gaza. The couples were selected from a draw of nearly 2,000 applicants.
"This celebration brought hope for change," said bride Thekra al-Masri, speaking for many displaced Gazans who attended.
Fragile Ceasefire in Effect
A ceasefire has been in effect in Gaza since October 2024, though it is described as fragile. The conflict began with a Hamas-led attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023, in which approximately 1,200 people were killed and 251 were taken hostage. Israel's subsequent military campaign in Gaza has resulted in over 72,560 deaths, according to Gaza's health ministry.
Renewed Violence Threatens Calm
On April 23, 2025, at least eight Palestinians, including three children, were killed in two Israeli strikes in Gaza, according to medics and first responders.
The Israeli military stated that it targeted "a terrorist" who had approached troops near the Yellow Line, an area held by Israeli forces, and posed an immediate threat. A Hamas spokesman condemned the strikes as "the horrific massacre" and accused Israel of undermining ceasefire implementation.
