Raiders Draft Cornerback Jermod McCoy in Fourth Round Despite Knee Concerns

View source

The Las Vegas Raiders selected cornerback Jermod McCoy with the 101st overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. The Raiders traded up with the Buffalo Bills to make the selection, sending a 2027 seventh-round pick to the Bills in exchange.

Player Background and Draft Status

McCoy, a cornerback from the University of Tennessee, was projected as a first-round pick before the draft. His draft position dropped after a medical recheck indicated he might need another knee surgery.

McCoy missed the entire 2025 season after suffering a torn ACL in his right knee in January 2025. He opted to forgo his final year of college eligibility and enter the draft. According to NFL Media, he may require surgery to repair a bone plug used for a cartilage defect, which could cause him to miss "extensive" time in 2026.

Player Career History

McCoy played one season at Tennessee in 2024, where he was named second-team All-SEC and recorded four interceptions. He previously played one season at Oregon State.

Player Statement and Team Response

McCoy stated that he was prepared for any draft position but had expected to be selected higher. He also said his doctors have told him his knee is "good," but he is willing to undergo further surgery recommended by the Raiders for the longevity of his career.

The Raiders, who had a significant need at cornerback, chose to draft McCoy despite the medical risks. If his knee remains healthy, he could become a valuable asset from the later rounds.
