IKEA Revives Inflatable Armchair for 2026 PS Collection
PS 2026 Easy Chair: Coming May 13, 2026 | $200
A design shelved for over a decade is finally getting its debut—this time, with a fix for the "beach ball" feel.
A Long Road to Production
The concept for the inflatable armchair dates back to 2014, when IKEA designer Mikael Axelsson first created a small mock-up. However, the project was quickly shelved due to significant technical challenges and the company’s troubled history with inflatable furniture.
IKEA’s earlier a.i.r. collection (2000–2013) was plagued by air leakage, deflation from cooling, and widespread customer dissatisfaction.
Rebirth in 2023
In 2023, Axelsson revived the concept for a new PS collection. To refine the design, he personally hand-welded 20 prototypes using tubular chrome frames.
The key innovation? A dual-chamber seat—featuring an outer air section and a central air section—which allows users to adjust firmness by simply regulating the air pressure.
