Multiple Injured in Shooting on Kirkwood Avenue in Bloomington

Early Sunday morning, a shooting on Kirkwood Avenue in Bloomington, Indiana, resulted in multiple injuries.

Police responded to the incident at approximately 12:25 a.m. The shooting followed a fight between two women. As of the reports, no suspects were in custody.

Incident Details

  • The shooting occurred in the 400 block of East Kirkwood Avenue, near a Five Guys restaurant.
  • Bloomington Police Department patrol officers monitoring crowds heard gunshots and responded.
  • According to the City of Bloomington, investigators reviewed video footage showing multiple individuals drawing handguns and two separate people firing weapons.
  • Police believe a fight between two women preceded the shooting, and stated the incident was not random.

Victims

Nine individuals were reported as injured.

  • One victim, a 20-year-old woman from Plainfield, Indiana, sustained a bullet wound to the upper torso and injuries from bullet fragments to her side.
  • Four individuals were injured by bullet fragments:
    • An 18-year-old from South Bend, Indiana, with bullet fragments in her ankle and shin.
    • A 22-year-old from South Bend, Indiana, with bullet fragments in her thigh.
    • A 17-year-old from Indianapolis, Indiana, with bullet fragments in her foot and ankle.
    • A 21-year-old from Indianapolis, Indiana, with bullet fragments in her shins and thighs.
  • Four others sustained cuts and scrapes while fleeing.

All victims were women aged 17 to 22. As of Sunday, all victims were treated and released except one, who was hospitalized in stable condition. It was not known if any victims are current Indiana University (IU) students.

Law Enforcement Response

Multiple agencies responded, including the Bloomington Police Department, Indiana University Police Department, Monroe County Sheriff's Office, and Indiana State Police. Remotely Piloted Aerial Vehicles and a helicopter were used for investigation.

Police are investigating whether a man at a gas station on West 17th Street was also injured. Bloomington Police Chief Mike Diekhoff provided information to the media.

Official Statements

  • Indiana University spokesperson Mark Bode stated that no IU students are believed to be involved in the shooting.
  • Bloomington Mayor Kerry Thomson expressed sadness and commitment to safety. A news conference was scheduled for 1 p.m. Sunday. Thomson also stated that Indiana's gun laws, which repealed concealed carry permitting requirements in 2022 and do not require background checks for handgun purchases at point of sale, prohibit the city from forbidding guns at public gatherings. Thomson encouraged people not to bring guns to gatherings and to advocate for changes to gun laws.
