The Physical Grind of 'Beast': Daniel MacPherson on Fighting a Real-Life Martial Artist
"He did not slow down." Daniel MacPherson describes the relentless intensity of choreographing fight scenes with martial artist Bren Foster for the upcoming MMA film Beast.
Actor Daniel MacPherson, known for roles in Neighbours and Foundation, recently discussed the unique physical demands of his role in the MMA film Beast. MacPherson performed fight scenes with martial artist Bren Foster, who he described as an extraordinary martial artist. Crucially, MacPherson noted that Foster did not slow down during choreography, requiring him to match Foster's speed blow-for-blow.
The film, directed by Tyler Atkins and co-written by Russell Crowe and David Frigerio, is set in the MMA ring. MacPherson plays Patton, a fisherman and former fighter who returns to the ring after a stint in prison. The cast includes Russell Crowe as former coach Sammy, Amy Shark as Sammy's daughter Rose, and Luke Hemsworth as a manager.
Drawing on his background in action television, MacPherson stated that his work on the series Strike Back provided valuable experience, as that production avoided stunt doubles for close-up shots. He also mentioned that acting opposite Russell Crowe was a test in its own right, comparable to the physical challenges of the fight scenes.
Amy Shark, an ARIA Award-winning singer, makes her acting debut in Beast. Shark stated that acting was her first love before music. She trained for the role, building on childhood Taekwondo lessons. Shark described the film as "real" compared to typical Hollywood productions.
Beast will be released in Australian cinemas on April 23 and will stream on Stan from May 27.
