Coledale RSL Club: A Story of Survival and Community Spirit
The Coledale RSL Club in Wollongong, NSW, faced the threat of permanent closure in 2022.
"More than 80 volunteers, including 90-year-old Noel 'Rooster' Brackenreg, stepped in to operate the club."
The club was hit hard by declining trade following the COVID-19 pandemic and consecutive wet summers. In response, the community rallied. Volunteers took over daily operations, keeping the doors open.
A New Direction
To ensure its survival, the club made a strategic shift. It sold some of its poker machine licenses and moved its focus away from gambling.
The club shifted focus from gambling to food and live music.
This change in direction, combined with the dedication of volunteers, has proven successful.
Financial Stability Achieved
After three years, the club is now financially stable. It continues to operate with a mix of volunteer and some paid staff.
A Historic Foundation
The club first opened in July 1948 as the Soldiers' Memorial Club, serving the community for over seven decades. Today, thanks to the efforts of its members and volunteers, it remains a vital part of Wollongong's social fabric.
