Mauna Loa 2022 eruption lava flow threatened Saddle Road; future monitoring to improve with satellite data and machine learning

View source

"It was uncertain whether the lava would block the road."

Event

During the 2022 eruption of Mauna Loa, the largest lava flow moved toward Daniel K. Inouye State Highway 200 (Saddle Road), a critical route in Hawaii.

Future Developments

Scientists anticipate improved real-time monitoring and more accurate predictions for future eruptions. This progress is due to the availability of satellite data from public and private sources and machine learning algorithms developed at the University of Pittsburgh in collaboration with a colleague in Italy.

These advances were described in a publication in the Journal of Volcanology and Geothermal Research.
