A federal criminal complaint charges Olivia Burgos with making false statements during the purchase of a Glock 29 pistol, a weapon later used in the fatal shooting of a Chicago police officer.
Merrillville, IN – A federal criminal complaint filed Monday in the Northern District of Indiana charges Olivia Burgos with making false statements during the purchase of a Glock 29, 10-millimeter pistol. The weapon was used in a shooting at Swedish Hospital in Chicago on Saturday, resulting in the death of 10-year police veteran John Bartholomew and wounding another officer.
Alphanso Talley, 26, has been charged in the shooting; he is not named in the federal charges against Burgos.
Burgos's Admissions
Burgos admitted to agents on Saturday that she lied multiple times on federally required paperwork when buying the gun in May 2024 from Range USA in Merrillville, Indiana. She stated she bought the gun for her boyfriend, identified as “Individual A,” who was legally barred from buying or possessing firearms due to a prior felony conviction.
Burgos also admitted to concealing her fentanyl addiction and daily drug use, and providing an incorrect home address. She lives in Highland, Indiana, with the boyfriend.
Legal Implications
ATF Special Agent William Engle stated in an affidavit that had Burgos provided truthful responses, the seller would have denied the transaction. Burgos is charged with making a material false statement in the acquisition of a firearm.
