"Down Under" provided the soundtrack for Travis Bazzana's arrival, but the Guardians couldn't crack the scoreboard.
CLEVELAND — The Cleveland Guardians called up infielder Travis Bazzana, the first overall pick in the 2024 MLB draft, from Triple-A Columbus. He made his major league debut against the Tampa Bay Rays, batting seventh and playing second base.
Bazzana recorded no hits in two at-bats with two walks. The Guardians lost the game 1-0, extending their losing streak to four games.
Roster Moves and Context
To open a roster spot for Bazzana, the Guardians optioned infielder Juan Brito to the minor leagues. The team had an open spot on its 40-man roster after Kolby Allard was designated for assignment, so no additional roster move was required.
Bazzana's promotion follows a period of instability in Cleveland's middle infield. Gabriel Arias sustained a left hamstring strain three weeks ago, moving Brayan Rocchio from second base to shortstop. Brito, called up after Arias's injury, started with five hits in his first three games but then recorded only four hits in 39 at-bats over his next 12 games. He also made four errors in 123 1/3 innings.
The promotion was first reported by Jeff Passan of ESPN. The option of Brito was reported by Zack Meisel of The Athletic.
Player Background
Bazzana, an Australian-born infielder, posted a .287 batting average, a .422 on-base percentage, and a .511 slugging percentage in 24 games at Triple-A Columbus. He recorded two home runs, nine doubles, two triples, 15 extra-base hits, and 10 RBIs. He also stole eight bases in 10 attempts and had a 17.9% walk rate and a 21.4% strikeout rate. He leads the International League in doubles and is tied for the lead in extra-base hits.
Bazzana is the 14th player from the 2024 draft class to reach the majors, the ninth position player, and the seventh top-10 pick. Two oblique injuries limited him to 77 games across the top two minor league levels in 2024. He missed two months of the 2024 season due to an oblique strain.
During the World Baseball Classic, Bazzana recorded two hits, including a home run, for Australia in a 3-0 win over Chinese Taipei.
Prospect Promotion Incentive and Contractual Implications
Bazzana qualifies for the Prospect Promotion Incentive as a consensus top-100 prospect. He cannot accrue a full service year through time on the MLB roster but could earn one by finishing in the top two in American League Rookie of the Year voting. The Guardians are not eligible for an extra draft choice if he wins Rookie of the Year because the promotion occurred after the second week of April.
If Bazzana remains on the MLB roster, he would be eligible for Super Two arbitration after 2028. Arias's initial recovery timeline of 4-8 weeks suggests a potential return in May; he could reclaim the shortstop role.
Debut Details
For his debut, Bazzana chose the song "Down Under" by Men at Work for his walk-up music. He stated that his parents suggested an Australian song, and he decided it would be appropriate. He is expected to play second base and designated hitter.
