LIV Golf postpones New Orleans tournament amid funding uncertainty

View source

LIV Golf has postponed its June tournament in New Orleans, originally scheduled for June 25-28 at Bayou Oaks at City Park, according to reports.

The news was first reported by New Orleans’ CBS affiliate WDSU on Monday.

Key Context: LIV CEO Scott O'Neil stated on Friday that LIV's fifth season would continue 'full throttle' amid reports of potential loss of funding from Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund.

The Decision: O'Neil spoke with Louisiana Secretary for Economic Development Susan Bourgeois, and both sides agreed to postpone the event. The tournament could potentially be moved to fall, after LIV's team championship in Michigan in late August.

Financial Implications

  • The state of Louisiana was set to spend approximately $7 million, including $5 million in hosting fees.
  • LIV will return the $1.2 million it had already received for those fees.
  • The state has already spent $2 million on course renovations for the anticipated event.

LIV Golf has not made an official announcement about the postponement.

Upcoming LIV Events

  • Next event: May 7-10 in Washington, D.C.
  • Subsequent events: South Korea, Spain, then the U.S. Open.
  • After the U.S. Open: The next LIV event is July 23-26 in the U.K.
