Character Developments
Emma D'Arcy stated that their character Rhaenyra, after being restrained for two seasons, is "on the precipice of seizing power."
Matt Smith described the season as featuring "scale, blood" and "a big bloodbath," stating that the show operates at its best when focused on scale and violence for his character Daemon.
Tom Glynn-Carney said his character Aegon "is taking some twists and turns, and he's learning a lot about who he wants to be as a man."
Steve Toussaint said the approach to the Battle of the Gullet was to focus on survival rather than epicness.
Season Themes
Reviews of the first four episodes indicate the season continues exploring the costs of war and character relationships, particularly between Rhaenyra Targaryen and Alicent Hightower. The season depicts all-out warfare after a deal between Rhaenyra and Alicent Hightower. New character Ormund Hightower is introduced.
One review described the tone as somber and regretful, with characters experiencing existential crises. The same review gave the season a grade of B-.
