OpenAI and Amazon Deepen Ties as Microsoft Relationship Fades

"This is the beginning of a deeper collaboration between AWS and OpenAI." — Amazon

In a significant shift in the AI landscape, Amazon announced on Tuesday that it now offers OpenAI's latest models through its AWS Bedrock service, just one day after OpenAI and Microsoft revised their landmark agreement to end Microsoft's exclusive rights.

A New Era of Partnership

The announcement marks a dramatic pivot for OpenAI, which had previously been under an exclusive agreement with Microsoft. On Monday, OpenAI and Microsoft revealed a revised deal that removes Microsoft's exclusive access to OpenAI products, opening the door for rival cloud providers.

Amazon CEO Andy Jassy called the move "very interesting" in a comment on the announcement.

What Amazon Is Now Offering

Amazon's AWS Bedrock—the company's platform for building AI applications and selecting models—now provides access to OpenAI's latest offerings, including:

  • OpenAI's newest models directly through the Bedrock platform
  • Codex, OpenAI's advanced coding model
  • Bedrock Managed Agents, a new agent-building service specifically designed for OpenAI's reasoning models

The Managed Agents service comes with features including agent steering and security controls, positioning it as a direct competitor to similar offerings from Microsoft and other cloud providers.

The Shifting Landscape

The Microsoft-OpenAI relationship has reportedly been deteriorating in recent months. OpenAI has been actively seeking partnerships with AWS and Oracle, while Microsoft has been diversifying its own AI investments—turning to Anthropic and developing a new agent offering powered by Claude.

Amazon's statement that "this is the beginning of a deeper collaboration between AWS and OpenAI" suggests the two tech giants are only getting started, with more integrated offerings likely to follow.
