Apple TV+ Renews Widow's Bay for Season 2, Signs Creator to Major Overall Deal
Apple TV+ has renewed the horror-comedy series Widow's Bay for a second season, announced just six days before the Season 1 finale, which is scheduled to air on June 17. The streamer also signed series creator Katie Dippold to a multi-year overall deal covering series development and a first-look on feature projects.
Series Overview
Widow's Bay is created by Katie Dippold, who serves as showrunner and executive producer. Hiro Murai is an executive producer and directed five of the ten episodes of the first season. Other directors include Ti West, Sam Donovan, and Andrew DeYoung.
The series follows Mayor Tom Loftis (Matthew Rhys), who seeks to revive his struggling island community—a place that lacks Wi-Fi and cellular reception. He must contend with superstitious locals who believe their island is cursed. Loftis succeeds in attracting tourists, but old stories of curses begin to manifest.
Apple Studios produces Widow's Bay. Dippold writes and executive produces with Murai, Carver Karaszewski, Claudia Shin, and Rhys. The cast includes:
- Matthew Rhys as Tom Loftis
- Kate O'Flynn
- Stephen Root
- Kingston Rumi Southwick
- Kevin Carroll
- Dale Dickey
- K Callan
- Jeff Hiller
Season 1 Finale: "We Hope You Enjoyed Your Time!"
The Season 1 finale reveals that the island's curse—originating from a pact between founder Richard Warren and a demonic force—can only be broken when Warren's bloodline is extinguished.
Tom Loftis initially believes his secretary Ruth (K Callan) is the last descendant. However, Ruth reveals that her secret child from an adulterous affair was Tom's late wife, making their son Evan the final descendant of Richard Warren. Tom keeps Evan's identity secret.
Sheriff Bechir (Kevin Carroll) shoots Ruth in the name of his own newborn child. The episode ends with Tom and Evan in a car, hearing church bells signaling that the covenant remains active.
Creator Katie Dippold stated that the finale is about acceptance and that Loftis has known deep down all along. Dippold noted that the curse is partially satisfied when a character dies, but "it wants more."
An underground torture chamber seen in the finale will be explored further in Season 2. Dippold explained that the system shown in the 1702 flashback has been modernized to keep things quiet, and details about what lies under the doors will be revealed later.
Development History
Dippold stated that she conceived the show nearly 20 years ago. She almost sold a version to Amazon in 2013 before deciding against it, saying she had a "bad feeling" and felt the show was not ready.
Season 2 Preview
Dippold stated that Season 2 is "about how everything is great on the island and there's nothing to worry about."
Critical Reception
During its first season, Widow's Bay received critical praise:
- RogerEbert.com called it "truly unlike anything else on TV"
- Decider referred to it as "a hauntingly good horror comedy"
Release Schedule
The first two episodes of Widow's Bay were released on Apple TV+, with the remaining eight episodes scheduled to release weekly every Wednesday through June 17.
