James Comey Indicted for Alleged Threat Against President Trump

"I'm still innocent, I'm still not afraid, and I still believe in the independent federal judiciary."
— James Comey

The former FBI Director, James Comey, has been indicted on charges of threatening the life of President Donald Trump. The case centers on a social media post from May 2025, in which Comey shared an image of seashells arranged to form the numbers "8647."

The Alleged Threat

Federal prosecutors allege that the post was a coded threat. "86" is restaurant and military slang for "get rid of" or "remove," while Trump is the 47th president of the United States. The Department of Justice argues that this constitutes a direct threat against the president's life.

Comey faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted. He has maintained his innocence, insisting the post was a political statement, not a violent one.

A History of Tensions

The indictment is the latest chapter in a long-running conflict between Comey and Trump. Comey was famously fired by Trump in 2017 while overseeing the FBI's investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election. Since then, the Justice Department has pursued multiple cases against the former FBI director. One of those cases was dismissed in November 2025.

The Legal Battle Ahead

Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche stated that the prosecution intends to prove its case through evidence, stating: "Intent will be proven through witnesses, documents, and the defendant."

James Comey responded to the indictment in a video statement, asserting:

"I'm still innocent, I'm still not afraid, and I still believe in the independent federal judiciary."
