Widow's Bay

A horror-comedy series created by Katie Dippold, Widow's Bay has completed its first season on Apple TV+ and has been renewed for a second season. The show is set on a fictional island off the New England coast and centers on a centuries-old curse.

"Hands down one of the most mesmerizing acts of narrative prestidigitation in horror." — Guillermo del Toro

Development and Production

Screenwriter Katie Dippold, known for work on Parks and Recreation, The Heat, Ghostbusters, and Haunted Mansion, served as showrunner. The pilot script was developed over approximately 20 years and was initially used as a spec for a job interview on Parks and Recreation.

Dippold stated that the original script lacked tension, grounding, and serialization. She revised it over time, including by visiting the Museum of Natural History to conceptualize the island's history. Dippold noted that earlier attempts to sell the show were abandoned because she felt the timing was wrong.

The show was ordered directly to series based on a pitch from Dippold and director Hiro Murai. The writers' room included individuals from WandaVision and other projects to develop mythology and lore.

Setting and Premise

The series is set on an isolated island in New England with a history that residents attribute to a curse. Season one begins with a fog rolling into town, presented as a sign of awakening evil. The story centers on Mayor Tom Loftis (Matthew Rhys), who seeks to develop the island as a tourist destination.

Genre and Tone

The show combines horror and comedy elements. According to Dippold, the production aimed for truthful character reactions to scary situations, with comedy emerging naturally from those reactions. Dippold stated the importance of balancing humor and horror, ensuring that scary scenes maintain tension without becoming campy.

Cast and Characters

The series features a cast including:

  • Matthew Rhys as Mayor Tom Loftis
  • Kingston Rumi Southwick as Tom's son Evan
  • Stephen Root as Wyck
  • Kate O'Flynn as Patricia
  • Kevin Carroll as Police Chief Bechir
  • K Callan as Ruth

Episodes are directed by Hiro Murai among others.

Season One Events

Episodes explore various horror subgenres while building the island's lore, including a haunted hotel with a killer clown, a demonic party planning book, a slasher villain pursuing the mayor's assistant Patricia, and a drug trip sequence with time skips.

The season finale, titled "We hope you enjoyed your time!", presents Mayor Tom with a choice: kill his secretary Ruth to end the curse, or spare her and doom the island. The episode concludes with the situation becoming more complex.

Reception and Viewership

Apple TV reports that Widow's Bay has tripled its launch-week viewership and its global audience has grown an average of 20 percent weekly. The show is the fastest-growing first-year series on Apple TV in terms of social engagement, according to Sprinklr.

Apple TV programming chief Matt Cherniss compared the buzz to that of Ted Lasso and Severance. The show received five TCA Awards nominations. Outgoing Apple CEO Tim Cook posted about the series on social media.

"The show is the fastest-growing first-year series on Apple TV in terms of social engagement."

Damon Lindelof and Guillermo del Toro have publicly praised the series. Marketing focused on positive word-of-mouth from critics and celebrities rather than traditional ads.

Future Seasons

Showrunner Katie Dippold is writing season 2 and has discussed expanding the show's universe. Regarding the timeline for season 2, Dippold stated: "I want the show to come back as soon as possible... There's no reason for it to be more than two years."
