Leapmotor Surpasses Jeep, Alfa Romeo in Australia for Second Consecutive Year
A Chinese EV newcomer has overtaken legacy auto brands in a shifting Australian market.
Sydney, Australia — Leapmotor, a Chinese electric vehicle brand, has outsold established Stellantis marques such as Jeep, Alfa Romeo, and Fiat in Australia for two consecutive years (2025 and 2026), according to year-to-date figures.
The sales gap is stark. In 2026 so far, Leapmotor has recorded 170 sales, compared to just 55 for Jeep, 26 for Alfa Romeo, and 26 for Fiat. These numbers mark a continued decline for the legacy brands as part of Stellantis' broader struggles in the Australian market.
Leapmotor launched in Australia only in 2024, making its rapid ascent all the more striking. The brand’s strategy, product, and marketing boss, Francesco Giacalone, attributed the early momentum to a growing appetite for electric vehicles among Australian buyers.
“We aim to become second or third within the Stellantis family,” Giacalone said, “but ultimately, our ambition is to compete with external Chinese rivals.”
Despite this internal success, Leapmotor remains a small player overall. By comparison, fellow Chinese automaker Geely has already surpassed 1,200 sales in Australia in 2026. Leapmotor’s global ambitions are far larger: the company targets 2.5 million worldwide sales by 2030, with roughly 40% coming from exports. Australia is positioned as a key market in that strategy.
