View source

The Western Australian Government has announced its annual free influenza vaccination program for winter 2025, featuring pop-up clinics at select AFL games at Optus Stadium. The program, part of the "Be Wise, Immunise" campaign, aims to increase vaccination rates and reduce winter hospitalizations.

Program Details

The Cook Government has allocated $8.4 million for the 2026 Free Influenza Vaccine Program, including $6.6 million specifically for the needle-free FluMist vaccine for children aged 2–11 years. The free vaccination period runs from May 1 to the end of June.

Vaccination Targets

The Government set specific vaccination targets for the winter season:

  • 40% of all eligible Western Australians
  • 30% of children under 12
  • 65% of adults aged 65 and over

In the previous year, 29% of West Australians and less than 19% of children under 12 received the influenza vaccine. Progress toward the targets will be reported weekly.

AFL Game Clinics

St John WA will administer free flu vaccinations at three AFL games at Optus Stadium in May:

  • May 2: West Coast Eagles vs Richmond
  • May 7: Fremantle Dockers vs Hawthorn
  • May 17: West Coast Eagles vs Greater Western Sydney

Patrons can access the service before and during the games. A Medicare card and photo ID are required. The needle-free FluMist vaccine will be available for children aged 2–11.

Statements

Premier Roger Cook stated that increasing vaccination rates would help protect the community and reduce pressure on hospitals. He encouraged footy fans to get vaccinated at the games.

Preventative Health Minister Sabine Winton said the campaign aims to make vaccines more accessible and expressed confidence in community support.

Health Minister Meredith Hammat noted that vaccination is one of the most effective ways to reduce seasonal demand on hospitals.

Additional Funding

The program also includes additional funding for RSV immunizations for infants and vulnerable groups.
