Pregnant woman with gestational diabetes uses remote monitoring tech to cut travel

Stefania Panella, a pregnant woman in regional Victoria diagnosed with gestational diabetes, used remote patient monitoring technology from Goulburn Valley Health. She logged her blood glucose levels daily via an app monitored by clinicians, reducing the need for travel.

The technology allowed clinicians to view current data, improving timeliness compared to email. Nurse practitioner Tara Jones stated that the system reduced the number of programs used for patient management.

Hume Rural Health Alliance (HRHA) introduced a virtual patient monitoring system for 16 health services in Victoria's north and north-east.

Alcidion's CEO Kate Quirke noted the technology is also used in the UK and New Zealand and is efficient in regional areas.

The Victorian government budgeted $21.4 million in 2024 to support planning and rollout of electronic medical records across Victoria, including for HRHA.
