Steller sea lion nicknamed 'Chonkers' stays at San Francisco's Pier 39, attracting visitors

View source

A massive Steller sea lion, estimated at 2,000 pounds and nicknamed 'Chonkers,' has taken up residence at San Francisco's Pier 39 for roughly a month, becoming a major attraction for visitors nationwide.

The Unlikely Resident

The sea lion hauled itself onto the pier and has remained there ever since. While Pier 39 is typically crowded with California sea lions, this individual is notably larger than the usual inhabitants.

A Rare Appearance

'Chonkers' is one of at least two Steller sea lions recently spotted in the San Francisco Bay. Steller sea lions are more commonly found in the colder waters of Alaska and the Pacific Northwest; sightings in the Bay Area are less frequent, making this a notable event for both locals and tourists.
