This announcement marks a significant pivot. In January, Google's VP of global ads explicitly stated there were "no plans" to introduce ads in Gemini. The company now attributes this shift to two key factors:

Gemini already has a paid subscription tier, with Google reporting 350 million total subscribers across its various bundles. This new ad model suggests a move to monetize the free tier more aggressively.
