Netflix Reschedules The Magician’s Nephew for February 2027 Theatrical Release
The film, directed by Greta Gerwig, will debut in Imax previews on February 10, 2027, before a wide release on February 12 and a streaming premiere on Netflix in April.
Release Schedule
Netflix has announced a revised release strategy for its upcoming adaptation of C.S. Lewis's The Magician's Nephew, directed by Greta Gerwig. The film is now scheduled for a wide theatrical release beginning in February 2027, followed by a streaming debut on Netflix in April 2027.
Originally slated for a limited Imax release in November 2026 and a streaming debut in December 2026, the film was rescheduled after a cast member's injury caused a six-week production halt, making the initial Thanksgiving 2026 date unfeasible.
The new schedule is as follows:
- February 10, 2027: Imax sneak previews begin
- February 12, 2027: Full wide theatrical release
- April 2, 2027: Streaming debut on Netflix
The film will remain in theaters for 49 days, representing one of Netflix's largest theatrical releases to date. The company previously released films for limited theatrical runs, such as the Knives Out sequels. By contrast, a sing-along version of KPop Demon Hunters had a wide release in August 2026 but only after its streaming debut, earning $19M domestically in its opening weekend.
Cast and Production
The film is based on Lewis's 1955 novel The Magician’s Nephew, the sixth book in The Chronicles of Narnia series. It serves as a prequel to The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, depicting the creation of Narnia and the discovery of the "Wood between the Worlds."
Cast includes:
- David McKenna (as Diggory)
- Beatrice Campbell
- Emma Mackey (as Jadis / the White Witch)
- Carey Mulligan
- Kobna Holdbrook-Smith
- Daniel Craig
- Meryl Streep
Creative team:
- Director and Writer: Greta Gerwig
- Composer: Mark Ronson
- Producers: Mark Gordon, Amy Pascal, Vincent Sieber, and Gerwig
- Executive Producers: Patricia Whitcher, Douglas Gresham, and Melvin Adams
- Co-Producer: Christine Crais
Background and Statements
Netflix acquired the rights to the entire Narnia book series in 2018. The film is produced in association with the C.S. Lewis Company.
Greta Gerwig stated she has had a long-time attachment to the story and expressed gratitude for the opportunity to adapt it.
Imax stated that the delay "creates an opportunity to give Narnia an expanded, wide release with a full theatrical window" and noted they supported the project from the beginning.
The C.S. Lewis Company praised Gerwig's adaptation for its emotional depth and expressed anticipation for audiences to experience the film.
Competitive Landscape
On its new release date of February 12, 2027, the Narnia film will compete with Sony's period film The Nightingale, starring Elle and Dakota Fanning, and Paramount's untitled K-pop film directed by Benson Lee (referred to as The Comeback Kid in one report, starring Glen Powell).
