Challenges in researching Canadian ancestors: non-standardized records, French script, and anglicized surnames

Many records are in French with old-fashioned, hard-to-read script. Surnames often changed between generations as families anglicized their names when moving to the United States. Examples include Desjardins becoming Gardner, and Bonenfant becoming Goodchild.
