NBC's 'Premier League Live' Brings Soccer Flair to Churchill Downs
For the third consecutive year, NBC's soccer studio show Premier League Live set up shop at Churchill Downs, bringing its signature blend of analysis and personality to the Kentucky Oaks and Kentucky Derby. Host Rebecca Lowe, alongside analysts Robbie Earle, Tim Howard, and Robbie Mustoe, discussed their horse selections from a set near the paddock on Friday.
A Unique Derby Tradition
“It’s a bucket-list thing, but obviously different from the Grand National,” said Lowe, who attended her first Derby in 2019. The rest of the panel were all first-time attendees.
The Picks: Personal Stories and Superstitions
The analysts' selections were driven by personal anecdotes and quirky reasoning, adding a layer of charm to the proceedings.
- Rebecca Lowe chose Chief Wallabee, citing a 15-year-old memory of seeing two wallabies that had escaped from a safari park in England.
- Tim Howard initially agreed with Lowe’s pick, but after hearing her story, he pivoted to a long-shot horse at 50-1 odds.
- Robbie Mustoe selected Red No. 1 (Renegade, the favorite), explaining he played for a "red" team (Middlesbrough) and the No. 1 horse sports a red saddle cloth.
- Robbie Earle chose The Puma, inspired by his own boots from the brand. The horse was later scratched.
A Feast for the Senses
“It’s amazing people-watching,” noted Howard, capturing the spectacle beyond the track.
Earle compared the Derby to Royal Ascot, but described it as "grander" and "a little bit different."
