Vehicle Crash and Explosive Device Incident at Multnomah Athletic Club

A single vehicle crashed through the front entrance of the Multnomah Athletic Club in Portland early on May 2, resulting in a fire and the death of the driver. No other injuries were reported.

Portland, OR – Early on May 2, a vehicle crashed through the front entrance of the Multnomah Athletic Club, sparking a fire that was quickly extinguished by responding firefighters. The driver of the vehicle was found deceased inside. Authorities have since confirmed the presence of multiple explosive devices and propane tanks in the vehicle.

Incident Timeline

According to Portland Fire & Rescue and the Portland Police Bureau, the incident occurred at approximately 2:49 a.m. on May 2.

Employees reported that a vehicle had crashed through the front entrance of the Multnomah Athletic Club and subsequently caught fire. Firefighters extinguished the blaze and discovered one deceased person inside the vehicle.

Investigation

Investigators from the Portland Police Bureau's Explosive Disposal Unit, the FBI, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) are assisting with the investigation.

During a search of the vehicle and the building, law enforcement located multiple incendiary devices, improvised explosive devices, and propane tanks. Some of the devices had partially detonated, while others were in varying states of activation. Robots were used to recover and detonate remaining explosive devices.

Chief Day described the incident as isolated and not related to domestic terrorism.

Club Response

In an emailed statement, Multnomah Athletic Club communications director Adam Linnman confirmed that no club members, staff, or guests were injured. The club is closed until further notice.

Road Closures

The following roads remain closed to facilitate the ongoing investigation:

  • Southwest 18th Avenue – from Southwest Taylor Street to Southwest Madison Street
  • Southwest 20th Avenue – from Southwest Morrison Street to Southwest Madison Street

Witness Reports

Club member Steve Blair described observing law enforcement activity at the scene, including the use of robots to move evidence.

Law enforcement reported that club employees saw the suspect vehicle slowly circling the building prior to the crash.
