Google's Android AICore Temporarily Doubles Storage for Safer AI Model Updates

On-device generative AI features come with a built-in safety net for updates.

Google's Android AICore, the system responsible for running generative AI features directly on compatible devices, includes a temporary storage buffer designed to prevent update failures. According to a Google support article, when a new version of the Gemini Nano model is available, AICore retains both the old and new versions for up to three days.

This dual-storage approach acts as a fail-safe. If the update encounters an error, the device can instantly revert to the older, stable version without requiring a full re-download of the model. Once the update is confirmed to be working correctly, the extra storage space is automatically freed.

The AICore powers a range of on-device AI features, including:

  • Advanced proofreading
  • Automatic speech recognition
  • Scam detection
  • Smart reply
  • Summarization
  • Translation

These on-device AI features are noted for enhanced privacy, offline functionality, and performance.
