John Vella’s 1970 Ford Capri: A Classic Cruiser Built to Last

"Retaining the original engine type unlike many V8 conversions, this Capri is a testament to purposeful modification."

The Powerplant
Under the hood, the 1970 Ford Capri retains its original character with a 3.0-liter Cologne V6 engine, rebuilt by Fenech Race Engines. The build features ported cylinder heads for improved airflow, a Burton Power camshaft for a lumpy idle and mid-range punch, and a 350 Holley carburetor to feed the fire. This setup delivers a responsive, period-correct driving experience.

Chassis & Suspension
The car sits on a Pedders suspension system, providing a controlled yet comfortable ride for long cruises. Stopping power comes from an unusual but effective combination: XY Falcon disc brakes paired with HQ Holden calipers at the front. The rear end is anchored by a Ford nine-inch differential with 3.9 gears, offering strong acceleration from a standstill.

Rolling Stock
Visually, the Capri commands attention with PPG Blue paint and a set of 15-inch Convo Pro wheels. This combination gives the classic coupe a clean, aggressive stance that is both race-inspired and street-friendly.

Interior & Sound
Inside, Pro-Stich has retrimmed the cabin in white vinyl, creating a striking contrast with the blue exterior. The driver is faced with a suite of Autometer gauges, ensuring vital engine data is always in view. For entertainment, a Kenwood CD player is fitted, perfect for tunes on the open road.

The Driving Purpose
This is not a garage queen. Vella uses the Capri for regular cruising, including trips to the Wintersun festival in Coolangatta. Looking ahead, the owner has hinted at future modifications, with a 351 Windsor V8 swap under consideration. For now, the 3.0-liter V6 remains a potent and unique choice in a sea of V8 conversions.
