Brush Turkey with Arrow Wound Found in Sydney, Police Investigate

A brush turkey was found with an arrow embedded in its leg in bushland opposite Cremorne Point Ferry Wharf on Sydney's North Shore.

Incident

A female jogger discovered the injured bird at about 5pm on April 24. The brush turkey was found with an arrow embedded in its leg.

Outcome

The injured turkey was taken to Taronga Zoo's Wildlife Hospital by WIRES (Wildlife Information, Rescue and Education Service) for treatment. The bird was subsequently euthanised.

Investigation

Police are now searching for the person responsible. This is not an isolated incident: four other brush turkeys have been injured by arrows over the past several years in the same area.

Legal Context

Brush turkeys are a protected species in Australia. Harming a native animal with a weapon is an offence under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act.
