Aiden O'Neill Injury Raises Alarm for Socceroos Ahead of World Cup
New York, NY – Aiden O'Neill, a key midfielder for the Australian national team, was forced off early in New York City FC's 2-0 defeat to DC United on Sunday, sparking concern just weeks before the 2026 World Cup.
O'Neill went down twice after being stepped on and was substituted in the 36th minute.
The 27-year-old, who has earned 29 caps for the Socceroos, has started Australia's last seven matches. Under coach Tony Popovic, he is considered a first-choice defensive midfielder alongside Jackson Irvine.
Pre-existing Issue Confirmed
NYCFC head coach Pascal Jensen confirmed O'Neill had been managing a pre-existing ankle condition. "He has an ankle issue. He plays with some issues in his ankle all the time," Jensen said. "But he had a moment in the game... his ankle just locked and had too much pain to continue."
World Cup Timeline Tightens
The injury arrives less than six weeks before Australia's World Cup opener on June 14. The Socceroos have a critical preparation schedule ahead:
- May 31: Friendly against Mexico (Sarasota training camp)
- June 7: Final warm-up match against Switzerland
With O'Neill's availability now uncertain, coach Popovic may need to assess defensive midfield alternatives as the tournament approaches.
