Ronald Breaker Appointed Next Dean of Science at Yale FAS

Ronald Breaker, a biochemist and Sterling Professor at Yale, has been named the next dean of science in Yale's Faculty of Arts and Sciences.

The appointment was announced by FAS Dean Steven Wilkinson. Breaker will begin a five-year term on July 1, 2026.

Background

Breaker joined Yale in 1995 after completing his Ph.D. at Purdue University and postdoctoral research at The Scripps Research Institute.

He has held leadership roles within FAS, including serving as chair of the Department of Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry since 2023 and chair of the Department of Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology from 2010 to 2016.

Breaker contributed to the planning of the Yale Science Building, which opened in 2019. He has also served on university-wide committees, including the Committee on Yale College Expansion and the Yale Committee on Risk Stratification - COVID-19 Research Restart.

Statements

FAS Dean Steven Wilkinson stated that Breaker's experience across physical and biological sciences and collaborations with Yale School of Medicine will make him a valuable member of the team.

Wilkinson expressed intent to support FAS science departments, faculty, and students in their research and teaching.
