Study Supports Dimensional Model of Psychopathology Over DSM Categories

Key Finding: A dimensional approach grouping symptoms into broader dimensions predicts outcomes better than categorical diagnoses.

Study Challenges DSM with New Mental Health Classification

A University of Kansas study published in the Journal of Psychopathology and Clinical Science examined the Hierarchical Taxonomy of Psychopathology (HiTOP), an alternative to the widely used Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM).

The researchers analyzed symptom clustering in veterans and found that grouping symptoms into broader dimensions—such as “internalizing”—offers superior predictive power compared to the standard categorical DSM diagnoses.

Lead author Kelsie Forbush highlighted a core issue with the current system. “DSM categories are heterogeneous and not informative for prognosis,” she stated, while noting that HiTOP dimensions may improve personalized care by offering more targeted treatment pathways.
