A Crown Fit for a Hyena: Jabali Gets a New Lease on Life

Zoos SA has successfully fitted a three-year-old spotted hyena named Jabali with a custom-made metal alloy crown after dental issues hindered his ability to chew.

The dental problems originated from a bite injury to his muzzle as a four-month-old cub, which caused jaw deformities as he grew. A subsequent CT scan identified several teeth requiring removal or restoration.

The crown, created by specialist Kirsten Hailstone, is designed to withstand the hyena's powerful bite, typical of animals that consume bone-heavy diets. The procedure required five to six hours under anesthesia, including transport to a facility in Glen Osmond, South Australia.

"Post-surgery, Jabali is reported to be recovering well."

The successful operation marks a significant milestone in the animal's care, ensuring he can continue to eat and thrive despite his early injury.
